Abstract
Given that body image often constitutes a significant part of an individual’s self-concept, and those with lower self-esteem are more prone to feeling dissatisfied with their body shape or size, regardless of their age or gender. This current study aims to explore the attitudes of body image and examine the relationship between self-esteem and body image among 180 university students in Malaysia. A quantitative, cross-sectional survey design was employed, utilizing the Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS) and the Body Esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults (BESAA). These instruments were distributed as online questionnaires via Google Forms shared through WhatsApp, Instagram, and email. Informed consent was obtained from participants before they completed the questionnaires and took part in the study. Findings reveal a high level of body appreciation among participants, with 88.9% scoring above the midpoint of the BAS. Additionally, Pearson’s correlation analysis indicates a significant positive relationship between body image and self-esteem, whereby r(180) = .61, p = .000 < .05). These results highlight the impact of cultural, social, and digital influences on students' self-perception, underscoring the need for targeted mental health interventions and culturally sensitive support systems in educational settings. The study emphasizes the importance of addressing body image issues in the digital age to foster positive self-esteem and overall well-being among university students.
