Abstract
This study profiled the physical fitness characteristics of 30 Selangor U18 male state basketball players—Guards (n = 10), Forwards (n = 13), and Centers (n = 7)—with a mean age of 17.00 ± 0.79 years (Guards: 17.00 ± 0.67; Forwards: 17.08 ± 0.95; Centers: 16.86 ± 0.69). Assessments included anthropometric measures, hand-eye coordination, agility (Y-COD), vertical jump, and sprint speed (10 m, 30 m). Significant positional differences were found in height (F = 20.52, p < .001), weight (F = 10.07, p = .001), BMI (F = 3.59, p = .042), vertical jump (F = 4.53, p = .020), and 30 m sprint time (F = 4.39, p = .022). Guards recorded the highest vertical jump (65.74 ± 4.29 cm) and fastest 10 m sprint (1.72 ± 0.15 s), while centers were the tallest (184.45 ± 5.23 cm) and heaviest (84.57 ± 13.75 kg). Compared to international data, Selangor players outperformed Turkish youth in 10 m sprint (p < .001) and Australian state-level semi-professional players in agility (p < .05). Vertical jump performance was significantly better than Malaysian norms (p < .001) and aligned with Korean standards (p = .39). No significant differences were observed in hand-eye coordination compared to Ghanaian youth (p = .77). These findings provide valuable benchmarks for talent identification and position-specific conditioning. Future development should focus on improving hand-eye coordination and agility through neuromotor and reactive training to enhance overall performance potential.
