Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly advanced in recent years, with deepfake technology emerging as one of its most controversial applications. Deepfakes, which are AI-generated videos, images, or audio designed to mimic real people, have become increasingly common on social media platforms. While they can be used creatively in entertainment and education, their misuse for spreading disinformation, scams, and harassment has raised global and local concerns. In Malaysia, cases involving political figures, investment scams, and even student-targeted incidents highlight the growing threat of deepfakes to digital trust and safety. This study investigates the role of AI-generated deepfakes in spreading disinformation on social media among students of Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) Kuala Lumpur. Using a structured questionnaire, the research assesses students’ awareness, exposure, and perceptions of deepfakes, while also exploring the potential of education-based solutions to strengthen digital literacy. Findings indicate that although awareness of deepfakes is limited, students recognize the importance of digital literacy programs in equipping them to critically evaluate online content. The study emphasizes the need for targeted educational initiatives to reduce the risks of deepfake-related disinformation and to promote responsible media consumption among Malaysian youth
