Abstract
Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) communication plays a critical role in shaping stakeholder trust, organisational reputation, and public engagement, particularly within the aviation industry. In Malaysia, growing regulatory emphasis on sustainability has increased expectations for organisations to communicate ESG initiatives effectively. Despite Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) demonstrating strong ESG commitments, limited research has examined how effectively these initiatives are communicated and perceived by the public. This study investigates the effectiveness of ESG communication by MAHB among Klang Valley residents, guided by Stakeholder Theory and Framing Theory. Using a quantitative research design, data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to 100 respondents. Descriptive statistics, reliability testing, Spearman’s correlations, cross-tabulation, and chi-square analyses were employed to address three research objectives: assessing ESG awareness and understanding, identifying communication challenges, and examining the impact of ESG communication on public perception and behaviour. The findings indicate a moderate level of ESG awareness but a weaker depth of understanding among respondents, highlighting a gap between exposure and comprehension. Trustworthiness emerged as the strongest determinant of overall ESG communication effectiveness, while stakeholder engagement and materiality showed weaker alignment. Challenges such as under-communication, information overload, and limited two-way engagement were identified as key barriers. The study concludes that effective ESG communication requires credible, audience-centred messaging and meaningful stakeholder engagement beyond regulatory disclosure
