Abstract

In industrial warehouse environments, forklifts and heavy machinery pose significant safety risks due to blind spots and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) conditions, where existing safety measures rely heavily on human awareness and lack automated enforcement. This project addresses the problem of real-time proximity detection between multiple moving objects to reduce collision risks in such dynamic settings. A UWB-based proximity alert system is developed to provide accurate, low-latency distance measurement without full localization infrastructure. The system consists of a master node and multiple mobile tags, where the master assigns one tag as an initiator to perform Single-Sided Two-Way Ranging (SS-TWR) by broadcasting poll messages and collecting timestamped responses to compute pairwise distances and identify the nearest neighbour. The system is implemented using DWM1001-DEV modules and evaluated under LOS, NLOS, and multi-node conditions. Results show centimetre-level accuracy up to 100m under LOS, while NLOS ranging remains functional with acceptable degradation and fails only under severe obstruction. A ranging update interval of approximately 4.5ms per node is achieved, and in multi-node scenarios, the system reliably identifies the closest node with minimal signal collision effects. These findings demonstrate a scalable, low-infrastructure solution for real-time proximity monitoring, enhancing situational awareness and improving safety in dynamic industrial environments
