Abstract

This study examined the use of sensory-based activities to support toddlers’ sensory awareness in an early childhood setting. Sensory play is widely recognised as important for young children’s development; however, it is not consistently implemented in many classrooms. Therefore, this study aimed to explore types of sensory-based activities and how sensory-based activities supported toddlers’ sensory awareness. This study employed a qualitative case study design using classroom observation. The participants consisted of four toddlers from a private childcare centre in Kuala Lumpur. Data were collected through observations and recorded as field notes during three sensory-based activities pressing and rolling air clay numbers, exploring sounds with musical instruments and shape exploration. The data were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed four main themes: tactile exploration, response to auditory stimulation, following simple instructions and engagement with sensory materials. The toddlers demonstrated active exploration through touch, showed curiosity towards sound, responded to simple instructions and remained engaged throughout the activities. The study concluded that sensory-based activities effectively supported toddlers’ sensory awareness and overall development and highlighted the importance of incorporating sensory play into early childhood classroom practices.
