Abstract

This study was conducted to examine parents’ perspectives on parental involvement in pre-schools, as well as the barriers they face in engaging with their child’s education. Participants participated in interviews regarding their understanding, practices and experiences of parental involvement. The results showed that parents’ involvement was active and varied including supporting learning at home, communicating with teachers and creating a positive learning environment that contributes to children’s overall development. However, parents also encountered several challenges, particularly time constraints, work commitments, limited communication from schools and uncertainty about how to support their child effectively. These barriers may be addressed through improved school–parent communication, flexible engagement opportunities and clear guidance provided by schools. This study has implications in highlighting the importance of strong collaboration between parents and schools, as well as practical approaches to enhance parental involvement in pre-school settings.
