Abstract

This project presents the development and evaluation of GuardianLink, a secure mobile-based parental control system designed to help parents manage children’s digital device usage while promoting responsible behaviour and emotional well-being. With the increasing exposure of children to internet-enabled devices, issues such as excessive screen time, reduced academic focus, and limited parental supervision have become more prominent. GuardianLink was developed to address these challenges through a balanced approach that combines supervision, motivation, and privacy protection. The system consists of four integrated modules: Remote Access Control, User Authentication, Digital Diary, and Reward-Based Access. Remote Access Control enables secure, real-time supervision of a child’s device activity. User Authentication enforces role-based access with Parent and Child roles, supported by secure login mechanisms and Two-Factor Authentication (2FA). The Reward-Based Access module encourages healthy digital habits by linking screen time privileges to task completion, while the Digital Diary module supports emotional expression and parent–child communication. The Waterfall development methodology was adopted, covering requirements analysis, system design, implementation, testing, and deployment. User requirements were gathered through questionnaires and observation, and system designs were documented using UML diagrams and architecture models. Security was emphasized through the use of AES-256 encryption for data storage and TLS 1.3 for secure communication. System testing confirmed that GuardianLink meets its functional and non-functional requirements, demonstrating reliable performance and secure operation. Overall, GuardianLink provides a practical parental control solution that integrates digital supervision with positive reinforcement and emotional support, offering a structured and privacy-focused approach to managing children’s digital behaviour.
