Abstract

Motorcycle accidents remain a significant issue, mostly the reasons are caused by the riders not wearing helmets and weak motorcycle security systems. This project is to design an IoT Smart Bike Starter with Helmet Detection system, aimed to improve rider safety and prevent unauthorized use. The system integrates pressure sensors, micro limit switches, an ESP8266 microcontroller, a relay module, a radio frequency (RF) module and an IoT platform to detect helmet usage and seat occupancy, thereby controlling the motorcycle ignition system. The methodology involves designing a dual-unit system including the helmet module and bike module, where the signal is transmitted wirelessly from the helmet module to the bike module. Moreover, a survey was conducted to collect the rider behaviour’s data and the component comparison and selection will be processed to ensure better system performance. In addition, the testing result shows the effectiveness of the system, which successfully prevents the motorcycle from starting when the helmet usage is not detected, the rider and helmet counts are inconsistent and without the owner’s permission. Additionally, the system status can use the IoT platform for real-time monitoring. Overall, the project demonstrates that the system effectively enhances rider safety and improves motorcycle security.
