Abstract

This project demonstrated the development of an IoT-based smart traffic control system designed to improve traffic flow efficiency, enhance pedestrian safety, and provide priority access for emergency vehicles. Research has been made to confirm the limitation of a traditional traffic light system, which depends on the fixed timing and often causes congestion, unnecessary long waiting times for turning vehicles, and unsafe pedestrian crossing condition. The objectives are to optimise traffic light duration for turning vehicles using real-time detection, implement emergency vehicle preemption through manual trigger, and design pedestrian-friendly features such as push buttons, time extension for elderly or disabled people, tactile paving and sound alerts system for visually-impaired. The methodology involves the use of microcontroller, infrared sensor, RFID detector to dynamically control traffic signals.
