Abstract
Air pollution has become one of the most serious issues affecting both the environment and human health. Prolonged exposure to carbon dioxide, particulate matter, and volatile organic compounds increases the risk of respiratory diseases, especially among the elderly and individuals with chronic conditions. This led to the development of the final year project titled “Portable Solar-Powered Air Quality Monitoring Device”. The project aims to provide a compact and sustainable solution for continuous air quality monitoring using renewable energy. The proposed system utilizes a solar panel and rechargeable battery to support portable operation, reducing dependence on conventional power sources. The device integrates multiple sensors to measure key air quality parameters, including CO₂ concentration, PM2.5, PM10, VOCs, temperature, and humidity. The collected data is processed by an ESP32 microcontroller and can be displayed locally and transmitted wirelessly to external devices such as mobile phones or laptops for real-time monitoring. Experimental results show that the PMS5003 sensor successfully detected significant increases in particulate matter during candle and incense tests, with higher readings observed during continuous smoke exposure. The MH-Z19B sensor demonstrated an increase in CO₂ concentration in enclosed environments with human presence and a decrease after ventilation. The BME680 sensor also responded to the introduction of incense by showing noticeable changes in gas resistance, indicating the presence of VOCs. Overall, the system was able to provide stable, real-time monitoring and effective wireless data transmission.
