Abstract

Flooding is a common and serious issue in many urban areas especially in tropical countries such as Malaysia. Flood event often causing significant damage to infrastructure and endanger public’s safety. Traditional drainage systems are often struggle when facing sudden heavy rain pour which will lead to dangerous flash floods and clogged manholes. The Flood Real-Time Observation & Automated Drainage Safety System (F-ROADS) project was developed to overcome these issues through a smarter and more responsive approach. This project had introduced three unique manhole cover designs that combine mechanical manhole cover designs with modern sensor. By integrating advance component, the system able to improve flood control, monitor waste levels and enhance public safety. Each design includes key features such as built-in filters, waterproof pressure sensors for real-time water level detection and infrared sensors for waste monitoring waste build-up inside the manhole. A microcontroller was used to process data and activate components to adjust manhole cover based on the severity of flooding. Besides, a tilt sensor and buzzers are also included to prevent displacement or theft, then LED light provide a clear flood risk alerts to the public. Throughout the project, both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to evaluate different design options and choose the best components. Blending traditional infrastructure with smart technology, F-ROADS aims to reduce flooding risks and promote safer, cleaner streets. This project supports the goals of Sustainable Development Goal of Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 9) by offering a practical solution to a real problem faced by communities today.
