Abstract

Alzheimer’s disease presents significant challenges in medication adherence, hydration management, and personal safety, often leading to severe health complications and increased caregiver burden. REMIND-MEDS proposes the design and development of an integrated smart pill and water dispenser that automates medication and hydration reminders, monitors pill and water inventory in real time, and enhances patient safety through location tracking and fall detection. The system consists of three core subsystems. Firstly, an automated notification module employing RTC, buzzer, and LED to remind patients and alert caregivers via the Blynk application, followed by a secure pill and water inventory monitoring mechanism using IR and water level sensors with a motorized dispensing unit to prevent overdosing or missed doses and lastly a patrol module incorporating GPS and motion sensors for real-time location tracking and fall detection. Together, these subsystems aim to support timely medication intake, reduce health risks associated with dehydration and dosage errors, and enhance safety monitoring, thereby improving quality of life for Alzheimer’s patients while easing caregiver responsibilities. Beyond its medical relevance, the project also demonstrates the practical integration of IoT-enabled sensors, mobile communication, and automated dispensing technology into a single user-friendly device. The proposed system not only addresses the immediate needs of Alzheimer’s patients but also provides a scalable framework that can be adapted for broader elderly care and chronic disease management applications.
