Abstract
Heavy rain is dangerous to drivers especially in low-lying urban regions where flooding is eminent. Most drivers do not know the real depth of the road side water and may just decide to cross without assuming the risk and hence accidents occur. This project aims to counter this problem by designing and developing an IoT-Based Smart Flood Detection and Driver Alert System. The system involves an ultrasonic sensor linked to an ESP8266 microcontroller with an inbuilt Wi-Fi that measures the water level on the road in real-time. The system gives drivers alerts using a mobile application or SMS when the water level surpasses a critical limit and alerts them regarding insecure road conditions. The system can be mounted on roadway features like poles or traffic lights or placed under the vehicles in order to detect floods on the move. The system notices the water depth and comparing it to the safety thresholds set out in advance, it decides whether the road is safe or not. It is designed to be affordable, scalable, and applicable in urban and rural contexts, and offers a feasible and efficient way of improving driver safety in flood conditions. The findings indicate that sensor technology combined with wireless communication offers a reliable and timely flood warning, minimizing the risk of accidents, and making trips safer during bad weather. The present project shows that an effective, but simple, IoT-based solution can be used to make the road usage and management of disaster risks much more efficient.
