Abstract

The present of contaminant of arsenic in water samples may cause potential problem to human health from various stages of arsenic poisoning. A study has been conducted for the determination of arsenic in natural water collected from river, lake, pond, pipe water and mineral water. The concentration of arsenic in water samples in this study was determined by using Microwave plasma-atomic emission spectrometer (MP-AES). MP-AES is new elemental analysis technique that designed to improve analytical performances which employed microwave induced plasma interfaced to an atomic emission spectrometer using nitrogen. In this study, the sample introduction in MP-AES had used multimode sample introduction system (MSIS) in order to improve the detection limit of arsenic. The limit of detection for MP-AES using multimode sample introduction system for As(III) and As(V) were 26.6634 ppb and 20.7508 ppb respectively. The parameter to obtain optimum signal for arsenic by using MP-AES were determined such as the concentration of nitric acid, sodium borohydride, sodium hydroxide, ascorbic acid and potassium iodide. The signal of arsenic was decreased in the present of ascorbic acid and potassium iodide in this study. This result indicated that the ascorbic acid and potassium iodide cannot be used in conjunction with nitric acid. Key words: Arsenic, nature water, MP-AES, multimode sample introduction system (MSIS).
