Abstract

Soft drink are widely consume by people, especially the youngster. The major ingredients inside a soft drink are sweetener, flavor, preservatives, colors, carbon dioxide, phosphate, caffeine and other components. In this hand-on project, I study the chemical component inside a soft drink and my major focus is to determine whether the soft drink contains caffeine. This study was carried out to determine the presence of caffeine inside a carbonated drink calledCoca-Cola. Quantitative analysis of caffeine was performed by a simple and fast using UV spectrophotometric.Carbon tetrachloride was used to extract the caffeine prior to analysis. The UV/VIS spectrophotometer method for the quantification of caffeine in soft drink was found to be relatively easy, fast and cheap. This analytical method was recommended for its rapid, accurate and sensitive quantification of caffeine in soft drink. The caffeine content in this carbonated drink analyzed in this study are well below the maximum allowable limits set by the US Foods and Drugs Administration. Furthermore, High Performance Liquid Chromatography was also used to determine whether the caffeine peak is present. The HPLC method for the quantification caffeine was found to be simple, precise, sensitive and accurate and allowed to obtain a good result. Other than that, some test on the present of glucose, phosphate, alcohol, sucrose and detection of pH were taken to show that soft contain these chemical components
