Abstract

Modern day network devices are usually monitored via a protocol called Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) but there are still legacy equipment which does not support SNMP. Thus, there is a need to allow all these equipment to be able to communicate with other networked devices using SNMP. The purpose of this industrial research project is to make the currently non SNMP compliant kiosk to be SNMP compliant by enabling all the devices resides in the kiosk to be able to communicate with SNMP manger. This project involves research on operations, message format, standards and underlying process of SNMP. After that, develop a simple SNMP manager (controller) and agent (controlee) which can be used on non SNMP compliance device. The SNMP manger will send SNMP request messages to the agent, the agent will then interpret the request, communicate with the dedicated device(s) and reply it back via standard SNMP port. The agent is also able to send SNMP trap message to SNMP manager explicitly in the event if alarm is generated from the device(s). This project was developed using agile software model as it suits the needs of Client Company to assess the development progress from time to time. Fact gathering techniques such as interview, observation and literature review were used in order to gather accurate and reliable data related to SNMP. Java Language has been used in the development of the system due to it is platform independent, went through intense scrutiny by security experts and supports programming for network based system. In the end, SNMP manager are able to complete all of its intended modules and achieve the objectives of this project. However, this system are not able to support all of the devices in the kiosk due to time constraint. Thus, future improvements such as periodic polling, live statistics and graph, automatic discovery and role based access control can be implemented to enhance the system. This project had served as a very good learning opportunity to pick up various knowledge and skills such as SNMP, socket programming, industrial standards, time management, communication, teamwork, etc.
