Abstract

URLScanner – Extension for Chrome is our project title and this is also the application’s name that is developed. This application runs on Google Chrome as a plugin (extension) to the current browser and helps the user to detect phishing website and protect them from inserting sensitive information such as ID/Password. Web surfing is quite common now as more and more users are able to connect to the internet with lower cost and it is very convenient for any user to gain internet access. Therefore, internet has become a daily activity for consumers with a laptop, desktop or mobile devices. Regard to the lack of knowledge of internet users towards phishing issues, there are lots of websites that provides tips and simple interactive games to increase the awareness. In URLScanner – Extension for Chrome, the users could report and rank the website immediately, such as adult content, phishing and safe. With our community, the websites that are submitted have to be voted by other communities with the right knowledge to vote whether the website is dangerous. Only after certain number of vote collected will categorized the reported website as their respective category as deemed by the community of URL Scanner. A total of 10 modules are covered in the project. Report, block, and rate website are the main function of the extension to provide users a safe browsing experience. System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) – Waterfall Model are deployed as the development method of URLScanner. By using this method, all the development will be monitored before moving to the next stage. This model helped ensuring the development goes in sequence and is easier to be maintained as we will be developing sequence by sequence. The development of the URLScanner extension for Google Chrome has been completed within the provided time frame and achieving its primary goal which helped users to detect phishing website and its supporting function which educates users to be a person that could determine whether a website is phishing users or not. Thus, the extension is able to create a community that could help each other to determine whether a particular link is a phishing URL by integrating multiple databases to achieve its goal. There are a lot of improvement such as increasing its efficiency and also implementing new functions to create a safer browsing experience
