Abstract

This dissertation examines the market survey of home design for active aging-in-place. A literature review is conducted to provide an overall understanding of the concept of aging-in-place. This study also investigated the common difficulties faced by aged people in their present home environment and the design and construction requirements of home for aged people thus form the basis of questionnaire construction. The survey is conducted in the form of structured questionnaire. A total of 50 respondents aged 40 years old and above within the Kuala Lumpur area was selected randomly to be the survey respondents. The survey results showed that the declining physical and mental ability as well as old age-related disabilities have made them more vulnerable to accidents at home. Thus, the home living environment requires considerable improvements to increase the safety and comfort of aged people. However, there is still room for improvement by developers and contractors, which also play an important role in the construction industry. It seems that there are certain barriers in the housing developments for active aging-in-place as not all the developers and contractors have started to build homes for active aging-in-place, although they realized there is a market for such housing. Therefore, further study is recommended to extend the survey to investigate the barriers that obstruct the housing developments for active aging-in-place in the Malaysian construction industry.
