Abstract

This dissertation was carried out to study the comparison between International and Malaysian Green Building Assessment Tools for local building projects. The literature review are consisting of the review of each of their sustainability elements, assessment process and market implementation of LEED and GBI. Moreover, the literature also comprise of comparing the rating systems of both green building assessment tools which including the total score of six main criteria and certification level. Two case study are reviewed in the chapter of literature review. The case studies are being reviewed related to the local green building projects which have attained Platinum certification level of GBI and LEED respectively. To achieve the aims and objectives of the research, the quantitative method such as questionnaire survey is conducted to review the understanding level and current practices of Malaysian construction practitioners towards GBI and LEED. The targeted respondents for this survey are the construction practitioners in the state of Kuala Lumpur such as Project Manager, Architects, Quantity Surveyor, Engineer and others who having knowledges and experiences on the green building projects. The hypothesis of conducting this research is to study whether there is a big difference between LEED and GBI application for local building projects. However, the results shows that there have slightly differences in the assessment and certification process between LEED and GBI. It also reflects that Malaysian construction practitioners having limited understanding level and current practices on LEED application as comparing to GBI application.
