Abstract

Paper based leave management system is inefficient. It caused heavy paperwork that is tedious and hard to maintain. One significant example is the manual reporting process that consumes time and human resources. To solve all these problems, the proposed leave management system is the solution. It improves the efficiency of leave management system by implementing leave escalation process and reduces time for manager to receive and approve a leave. Automated reporting process further improves the efficiency of the system. Based on the literature review, usually leave management system consists of functions such as apply leave, approve leave, reject leave, view leave transaction and preset leave type. Different country and different company can lead to different leave policy. Therefore setting function is important to customize the system to different organizations easily. The scope of the project covered leave application module, leave management module, leave entitlement and type setting module, escalation process setting module and reporting module. The system can be used to assist the leave management process of an organisation, which mainly covered the Human Resource (HR) department and almost all other departments that need to apply leave. Extreme Programming (XP) and prototyping are used as the software development methodology to develop the system. Rational Software Architecture (RSA), Notepad++, Google and IE’s built-in developer tools, Pixel Ruler and JSBin are the tools used throughout the project. Blackbox testing, boundary value analysis, equivalence partitioning, module testing, system testing and regression testing were applied to assure the quality of the system. The outcomes of the system are it speeds up the leave management process, reduce paperwork needed in leave management process and simplify the reporting task in management activities at the same time providing good user experience to the users. Some strengths of the system are it has responsive design and provides flexibility of access to the system from any mobile devices via the Internet. The weakness of the system is the system has not been integrated with the company’s database and the package of OBOSS Application Workspace.
