Abstract

Even though numerous study recruited elite and sub-elite fencers aged from 18 and above. There is no research that had done in profiling young fencer which is 10-14 years old. This research is to identify whether successful fencing is due to the physical component and identify whether which physical component will contribute the most in the fencing sport. A total of 25 participants, aged 10-14 from the Selangor Youth Fencing Open 2014 competition participated in this study. Convenience sampling was used to select subjects (n = 25, male = 17, female = 8) and which were categorize based on their gender, age category and weapon category. The groups were tested with Squat Jump (SJ) (Reliability = .98; Validity = .78), Counter Movement Jump (CMJ) (Reliability = .97; Validity = .78) , Arm Driven Counter Movement Jump (ACMJ) (Reliability = .87; Validity = .78), Sit and Reach Test (Reliability = .98; Validity = .99) Hand Grip Strength Test Right and Left (Reliability = .82), Shuttle Run (Reliability = .88; Validity = .93 ) and Time of Lunge (Reliability = .73; Validity = .84). There were no significant differences in the relationship between physical components and the fencing performance for U12 Epee male, U12 Foil male, U14 Foil male and U12 Foil female. There were only significant difference on U14 Foil female but only on SJ and CMJ other physical components were not significant. In short, the finding of this study shows that certain physical characteristics does contribute to successful performance in fencing.
