Abstract

In order to fulfill the requirements for Bachelor of Information Technology, students are required to propose a final year project before graduating. The main purpose of developing the Final Year Project Management System is to eliminate the current tedious way of managing students’ final year projects by developing a computerized system that assists in managing all the operations of final year project. This project is developed by me and my group member, Leslie Cheng Soon Beng. The Final Year Project Management System consists of 8 modules which include User Management, Appointment Making, Students-Supervisor Pairing, Quota & Workload, Project Allocation, Announcement, Assessment and Reports Generation. These modules designed to replace the current operation of final year project management from student makes appointment with supervisor, being supervised by a supervisor, submitting assignments until mark is assessed by the supervisor. These modules are divided averagely to me and my partner. Modules that are handled by me included User Management, Appointment Making, Quota & Workload and Project Allocation. During the Analysis stage of System Development Life Cycle (SDLC), several methods including questionnaire, interview and observation have been used to gather the user requirements on the proposed system. The development of system were using Incremental Model due to the higher priority requirements are being delivered to the end users first and enhancements come in the next delivery. Throughout each phase of SDLC, deliverables such as Questionnaire Survey, System Requirements Specification, System Design, Test Plan and System Implementation Guide have been prepared. This system has been undergone several testing included unit testing, integration testing, system testing and user acceptance testing to ensure that the system is error free and able to deliver to the end user for actual operation. The system has been tested by the end users and enhancements are made upon the feedback from the end user. The delivered final year project management system provides the necessary functions that are required by the end users. The strengths of the system including reduce the time taken for processing the students’ final year projects by supervisors and admin. It brings ease for both the students and supervisors to have a platform to collaborate on the projects. The weakness of the system could be the needs of improvements and enhancements to make the management system more powerful and looser coupling. Throughout the development of this system, I learnt to apply my programming knowledge and gained experiences on proposing, preparing, developing and implementing the system to assist the end user activities. The technology is growing rapidly and it is good if the technology can be implemented to increase the ease of the end users.
