Abstract

Many methods have been used to synthesize Ba0.5Sr0.5Fe12O19. Sol-gel route is the simplest and delicate method. In this research, magnetoplumbite-type (M-type) hexagonal barium-strontium ferrite (Ba0.5Sr0.5Fe12O19) nanoparticles were synthesized by sol-gel route with ethylene glycol (C2H6O2) which acted as the gel precursor and at two different calcination temperatures - 850◦C and 950◦C respectively. Comparison of the synthesized barium-strontium ferrite and Strontium Ferrite (SrFe11.2O19 and SrFe10O19) with Fe/Sr mole ratio of 10 and 11.2 were also studied. The main objective in this study is to study the effect of calcination temperatures and mole ratio on the M-types hexagonal ferrite. The prepared samples were then characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Photoluminescence spectrometry (PL) and Energy-dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and Magnetic Susceptibility Balance. FTIR spectra revealed the characteristic peaks of hexagonal ferrite were detected at between 650cm-1 to 450cm-1. EDS confirmed the elements presented in ferrites were mainly M-type ferrites with Mini-SEM micrographs confirming the ferrites exhibiting M-type hexagonal and spherical in shape. Higher calcination temperature was found to produce larger particle size of barium-strontium ferrite with higher content of oxygen vacancies. Positive mass susceptibility value indicated that the samples can be ferromagnetic materials having positive susceptibility and strong permanent magnetization even without external magnetic field.
