Abstract
The objective of this study was to examine the effects of resistance band training (RBT) and body weight training (BWT) on adult’s health parameter such as blood pressure (BP), muscular endurance (ME), skeletal muscle mass (SMM) and body fat mass (BFM). The study was a pre-test-intervention- post-test design; subjects were prescribed with RBT and BWT exercise for six weeks. Following institutional ethical approval, 18 males (age: 20.4±1.8years; weight: 70.4±13.7kg; height 173.6±4.4cm; pre-hypertensive blood pressure: SBP 130±5.3, DBP 75.9±10.6mmHg) were recruited, matched according to ME and BC then assigned to RBT (n=9) and BWT (n=9) groups. Two training days per week involving major muscle groups from upper to lower limb with training progression were scheduled throughout the six week training intervention. Exercise performance test to assess ME (90° Push-Up Test, 60-seconds Squat Test and Curl-Up Test) and measurement of BP, SMM and BFM were performed. Results showed that there were significant difference in the mean score of Curl Up test in core ME between the RBT (48.56±16.26) and BWT (96.33±63.36) groups post-test where p < 0.05. However, there was no significant difference in the mean score of BP, SMM, and BFM between the RBT and BWT groups post-test at p > 0.05. Furthermore, results showed no significant difference in the mean score of DBP, SMM, and BFM between pre-test and post-test in the RBT and BWT groups where p> 0.05. In contrast, there were significant difference in the mean score of SBP (124±4.95; 122±3.95) and ME (S: 58.89±7.37, 58.00±6.75; PU: 29.56±11.99, 35.22±13.42; CU: 48.56±16.26, 96.33±63.36) between pre-test and post-test in the both groups where p < 0.05. Current study proves that the RBT and BWT helps to improve SBP and whole body ME, but not in DBP, SMM and BFM of pre-hypertensive adults.
