Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) (0.3g.kg-1BW) on 60 min endurance treadmill running performance and recovery of trained runners. A total of 10 trained runners (age: 20.7 ± 1.06 years; weight: 61.35 ± 6.21 kg; height: 166.10 ± 3.73 cm; VO2max 58.43 ± 5.62 ml.kg.min-1) from Tunku Abdul Rahman University College were recruited in this study. They undertook 2 experimental trials which included 1 NaHCO3 (0.3g.kg-1BW) trial and 1 PLA trial (0.045g.kg-1BW of NaCl) 60 min prior to the 60 min endurance treadmill running (30 min preloading run followed by 30 min maximum distance run). Each test was separated at least 7 days apart. Results showed that the distance covered in 60 min endurance treadmill running for the NaHCO3 trial was further than the PLA trial (5233.60 ± 524.72 m vs. 5021.40 ± 440.18 m; p= 0.012) associated with greater blood lactate level and heart rate measures (5.66 ± 1.09 mmol.L-1 vs. 3.68 ± 0.71 mmol.L-1; 172 ± 17.37 beats.min-1 vs. 175 ± 19 beats.min-1 ). At post recovery, a greater decrement in blood lactate level from 5.66 ± 1.08 mmol.L-1 to 2.53 ± 0.91 mmol.L-1 (~55%; p<0.01) in NaHCO3 trial as compared to placebo trial (from 3.68 mmol.L-1 to 2.17 ± 0.50 mmol.L-1; ~41%; p<0.01). In conclusion, the present study demonstrates the ingestion of NaHCO3 (0.3g.kg-1BW) 60 min prior to the testing improved 60 min endurance treadmill running and enhanced the recovery rate after exercise.
