Abstract

1.25 million people are killed daily due to the road accidents on a worldwide scale while the number of road crashes in Malaysia is showing dramatic increase every year, indicating an alarming road safety issue and the need to address road safety consciousness. This study explores media exposure, purpose of utilising and influences of road accidents news stories among young drivers aged from 18 to 25 in the Klang Valley. Survey quantitative research method was utilised in this study to find out the perceptions of young drivers toward road accident news stories. This study shows that radio and newspaper were ranked as the most frequent used media to get road accident news stories. Young drivers consume road accident news stories for social interaction, surveillance as well as getting information and details of road accident news. The findings suggest that young drivers are willing to make improvement on their driving behaviours after reading road accident news stories. The influences of road accident news stories among young drivers was also explored from the gender and race perspective. Female young drivers are being influenced by the feeling of fear after consuming road accident news stories and willing to improve on their driving behaviour compared to male young drivers. Chinese young drivers are also mainly caused by the feeling of fear to improve on their driving behaviours compared to other races.
