Abstract

This project was aimed to study the performance of the particleboard made from sugarcane bagasse with the sodium silicate as the binder. In this project, there were two main areas of focus namely, binderless particleboard made from sugarcane bagasse; particleboard made from sugarcane bagasse admixture of sodium silicate. All the above mentioned particleboards were produced by hot compression moulding process. The binderless particleboards made from sugarcane bagasse were produced by different heating temperatures and holding times which were 150。C, 170。C and 190。C; 20 minutes, 25 minutes and 30 minutes respectively. From the observations, heating temperature of 170 。C with 30 minutes holding time shown the best performance. Secondly, a study on the different percentage of sodium silicate in particleboard i.e. 20%, 15% and 10% were conducted at 170 。C with 30 minutes holding time. The results obtained from the project shown that, the properties of the particleboard depend on quality and quantity of the binder as well as the compression temperature and holding time. The densities, thickness swelling, flexural/bending strength, internal bond, impact resistance, acid and alkali resistance, thermal insulation of the particleboards were conducted based on the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) and the particleboard produced under this project in according to JIS could be classified as decorative particleboard and base particleboard type18 and 8.
