Abstract
This study investigated the effect of vocal and instrumental music on the short-term memory (STM). A total of 90 college students participated in the experiment. The participants were randomly assigned into three groups: instrumental music, vocal music and silence condition. Participants were required to recall a list of 20 words in any order in one of the three conditions. The results showed significant differences, p =.000 that supported Hypothesis 1, that is the memory performance under instrumental music condition is better than vocal music condition, and Hypothesis 2, that is the memory performance under instrumental music condition is better than silence condition. However, there was no significant difference, p =.622 found in memory performance between silence and vocal music condition. Hence, Hypothesis 3 was not supported.
