Abstract
The objective of fire resistant materials is to eliminate burning of materials as a cause of death and destroy property in our life. Waste materials were any materials unused, rejected as worthless. The purpose of this project is to convert waste materials to valuable products such as fire resistant materials. Waste materials chosen in this project was rachis and wood dust which are easily available. Rachis and wood dust were converted into small particle in order to let sodium silicate absorbed into the materials. Sodium silicate was passive fire protection binder and it is used to reduce the cost of making fire resistant materials. Compaction process was used to compact small particle of rachis or wood dust into solid shape. Temperature was applied on the product produced by compaction to harden the sodium silicate which makes the product harder. Direct burning and furnace testing were used to test fire resistant of the specimens. Besides, chipboard was used as controlled in this project. Both the test show wood dust and rachis had better fire resistant properties as compared to chipboard. Rachis and wood dust can be used for producing fire resistant materials after gone through mixing, compaction and heat treatment process. Thus, percentage of sodium silicate used in mixing, compactness of the materials can affect the fire resistant properties of the materials. Toxicity testing need to be conducted to ensure the product is safe. They are still many factors have to be considered for utilization waste materials on making fire resistant materials.
