Abstract
The objectives of carrying this project is to study on the effect of different weight percentage of Strontium (Sr) in aluminium alloy LM24 and also to compare the mechanical properties and microstructure of sand casting and permanent mould casting aluminium alloy LM24. This project dissertation is divided into 6 chapters. Chapter 1 provides a brief introduction of the main materials used for this project dissertation, which is aluminium casting alloy LM24. The compositions of the material, mechanical properties as well as the advantages and limitations of the alloy used are described. Chapters 2 discuss the literature review which includes the different grades of aluminium casting alloys and the effects of alloying elements in aluminium alloy. Followed by the requirements and general process parameter for sand casting. Other than that, this project focus on details of modification in aluminium casting. Chapter 3 highlights the experimental process and procedures, test specimens preparation from sand casting and permanent mould casting until finished specimens. After that, various testing such as spectrometry, Vickers hardness test, Izod impact test and microstructures observation are carried out. Chapters 4 explain the results and discussion based on the testing conducted. Each testing results come together with discussion so that can be easily refer and reduce or avoid any confusion. Chapter 5 is the conclusion and Chapter 6 is the recommendation for future work.
