Abstract

The main objective of this project was to study on Tafel behaviour of mild steel and effectiveness of Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) based on Potentiostat. Hydrochloric acid sodium hydroxide was used to adjust the required pH value for acids and alkaline solutions. Then, Tafel plot under different pH values will be constructed by using potentiostat. The Tafel behaviour with the reference of Pourbaix diagram was studied which involved immunity, corrosion and passivation. Corrosion potential, current density and corrosion rate of different pH value were recorded for further analysis and Tafel plot also be observed. Other than that, the effectiveness of Impressed Current Cathodic Protection on mild steel was also studied. These studies include the theory of corrosion mechanism and concepts of cathodic protection. The concepts of corrosion mechanism will be explained based on electrochemical process where the chemical reactions took place at both the cathode and anode were discussed. Different applied voltage was carried out during the experiments which were 2 volt and 4 volt and the reading of weight of mild steel with oxide film was recorded for further analysis. Photographs were taken to support the study of this dissertation. The final part of this writing consists of the conclusions and recommendations of the Potentiostat and Impressed Current Cathodic Protection experiment were carried out.
