Abstract

As well-known the stainless steel is good in corrosion resistance with their special characteristic of “stainlessness”. This is due to the presence of chromium which will be easily oxidized into chromium oxide that is passive in natures which protect the stainless steels from corrosion. However, if it combines with carbon, chromium carbide will form especially along the grain boundaries that will result in the increase of the hardness. Finally this will result in intergranular corrosion when the stainless steels are being subjected to acidic environment. Therefore, the objectives of this dissertation are to study the impacts of normalizing on type 304 stainless steel before and after sensitisation, to study the tendency of forming intergarnular corrosion caused by sensitisation by conducting Copper Sulphate-Sulphuric Acid Test(CSSA), and to conduct experiments to restore the mechanical properties i.e. Charpy impact test and Vicker hardness test and corrosion resistance of sensitized type 304 stainless steels.
