Abstract

The objectives of carrying out this project are to study on the effect of different weight percentage of Titanium-Boron (TiB) in aluminium silicon alloy LM24 and also to compare their mechanical properties and microstructure in sand casting and permanent mould casting. This project dissertation is divided into 6 chapters. Chapter 1 provides a brief introduction of the main materials used in this project dissertation, which is aluminium silicon alloy LM24, which includes the compositions, mechanical properties as well as the advantages and limitations of the alloy. Chapter 2 is about the literature review which includes the effect of alloying elements of aluminium silicon alloys and the mechanism of grain refinement by the AlTiB grain refiner. Factors controlling the nucleation of grains are also highlighted. Other than that, theories of grain refinement, grain refinement methods, and applications of aluminium are also discussed in this chapter. Chapter 3 highlights the experimental and procedures, test specimens preparation from sand casting and permanent mould casting until finished specimens. After that, various testing are carried out which includes spectrometry, Vickers hardness test, Izod impact test and microstructures observation. Chapter 4 includes the combination of results and discussion based on the testing conducted. Each testing results come together with discussion so that it can be easily referred and reduced to avoid confusions. Conclusion and recommendation for future work are discussed in chapter 5 and chapter 6.
