Abstract

The intelligent recycling bin is designed to replace the traditional recycling bins that are currently used in the market. It will automatically differentiate and sort out the recycling goods placed in it. The intelligent recycling bin will also encourages recycling as it is fully automated and users will not have to manually sort the recycling goods. This project uses the combination of various types of sensors including infrared sensors, capacitive sensor and inductive sensors to detect and differentiate various types of item by the material that are used to made them. The intelligent recycling bin is capable of differentiating aluminium cans, glass, paper and plastic. PIC microcontroller is used to control the whole system. The PIC16F877A is used because it fulfils the number of input/output pins that are required to control various input and output device. The input device used in the intelligent recycling bin includes infrared sensors, capacitive sensors, inductive sensors and limit switches. The output device used in the intelligent recycling bin is LEDs and servo motors.
