Abstract

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) is a system that read vehicle number plate automatically. ANPR is a technology which consist mainly software, which allows computer system to automatically read vehicle number from digital image. In this project, ANPR is divided into 2 parts, which are: l) image processing and 2) optical character recognition. Both parts care done in MATLAB. In this project, the system is created for the environment of a car park entrance and exit. Specification of vehicle number plate has to be as specified by Jabatan Kerja Raya Malaysia. In image processing, the system will read image from video input (in this case, a webcam) and then identify the location of vehicle number place when magnetic sensor is triggered (in this case, a push button in user interface). During the process of locating car number place, the image is grayscaled and then binarised. Each character on the vehicle number plate is segmentised into separate images and then saved into matrix array. These images are then resized to match the sizes of characters in template. In optical character recognition, template matching is used in this system. Template is a MAT-file where sample image is saved into data and to be compared with actual image. The system will compare the resized segmented images with template, if the image is match with template, it will return the character information in ASCII which is recognised by machine. The system will save information into database with corresponding information such as time of vehicle entry and exit, and date of the day. These data will be transferred into excel file for ease of sorting in future trace back. Besides that, image will save into a specific folder name according to the vehicle number plate.
