Abstract
There are over 2500 infants that die in the United States each year due to the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) SIDS is a syndrome whereby a healthy baby encounters sudden and unexplained death. SIDS could not be prevented as the exact causes are unknown and there are no ways to predict when it will happen. Use of bouncy chair for baby daytime nap is common in Malaysia and it is not rare to have SIDS cases reported for baby resting on bouncy chair. The main objective of this project is to develop a baby bouncy chair with monitoring system to reduce the occurrence of SIDS. There are two sub-systems in this baby monitoring system namely the Room Temperature Monitoring & Alerting System and Baby's Movement Monitoring & Alerting System. Both sub-systems are controlled by a microcontroller, PIC16F877A. The Room Temperature Monitoring & Alerting System consists of a temperature sensor, LM35 which constantly measures the room temperature and if the room temperature is not in the range of 250C- 300C, the microcontroller will activate the buzzer to alert the parents. This system is designed to provide a comfortable environment for baby. Meanwhile, the Baby's Movement Monitoring & Alerting System constantly monitors the baby movement through a pair of Infrared Sensor located on the both side of the bouncy chair. If the IR beam is blocked by the baby due to baby's motion, the buzzer will be activated to warn the parents. This feature is developed to minimize the probability of baby falling down from the bouncy chair. Last but not least, the monitoring system also comprises a Baby Comforting System which plays soft music from Melody IC and gently spins a colorful decorative item when the system is turned on.
