Abstract

The final year project is a compulsory program for final year mechanical engineering students at Tunku Abdul Rahman University College. Students must come out with an idea of their own title where project-based learning are included, fundamental principles of engineering design and engineering analysis. My title of the project is to design an extendable cutting tool for palm oil mill. This paper will discuss the design and fabrication of the tool. The scope of the project will include design, model constructing, testing and implementation of its practical use. The objective of the tool is meant to be useful, effective, convenience, reliable, friendly user and safety in mind. There are many types of extendable cutting tool that has been long existed in the market, hence the research and knowledge in this field must be sufficient to design a new cutting tool that are different from what we have in the market. All of this research information will listed down in a literature review. The concept of this project came from a supervisor based on his experience that inspired the idea. This is because the palm oil mill industry does not have any powerful tool to cut down the branches and it consumes a lot of time to remove the branches. The needs of the tool are based on surveys from the palm oil mill workers. From the survey data collected, based on the needs to set as the objective of this project. The priority of the design has been guided based on the needs of the worker to increase efficiency and productivity in mind. This project took three semesters to be completed. The project requires two students to form a team and thus the cooperation between members are vital. Other than that, the time management, discipline and commitment is important to make the project flow smooth and be done on time.
