Abstract

Global warming is getting more and more serious. The main factor which lead to global warming is high demand dependent on non-renewable energy. Non-renewable power plant will releases carbon dioxide and other hazardous gases which will influence to the human health and also to the environment. Therefore, the renewable energy gradually replacing the position non-renewable energy. This project is going to investigate on the renewable energy which is wind energy. Previously, wind energy is used for grain grinding process or to pump water for irrigation. Nowadays, a modern wind turbine can use to generate electricity. The wind power came from the conversion of energy of kinetic energy from the wind and converted into mechanical energy and finally into electrical energy. Malaysia having the low mean wind speed which is not suitable for the big scale wind turbine, there are many type of airfoils which is suitable as the shape wind turbine blade depend on the speed of the wind. Therefore, the first objectives of this project is analyse the aerodynamic performance in different type of airfoils and figure out the optimum and critical angle of attack. In this simulation, the best airfoil is determined which is SG 6043 airfoil with optimum angle of attack at 6º and the critical angle of attack at 16º. The second objective is to analyse and design the wind turbine structure to have a better resistance against to the wind loads. There are a lot of example where the wind turbine failed to sustain against the wind loads and finally collapsed during operation. This will affect the safety issue to the nearby residence, if this case caused death issue then it will greatly affected the stock price and image of the company who in charge in this project. In this project, the optimisation of the wind turbine tower has been done and Design B was selected as final design
