Abstract

This study explored and solved the problems involved in the damage on the tinplates described as wicket marks. The critical importance of designing a wicket stopper that aids in producing a flawless tinplate that does not possess wicket marks, which cause the rejection of the tinplates from customers, motivated the researcher to undertake this study. The study’s goals were to: 1) study the curing and drying process on tinplates and the effect on tinplate, 2) develop and propose a component design to eliminate wicket marks, and 3) conduct flow and stress simulation to study the effect of air flow onto the tinplate on the tinplate vibration when in contact with wicket and in contact with the designed component. Throughout the study in literature review, which included details about every component and process involved from the beginning of a steel strip to a cured tinplate, multiple solutions and the means to test them are created. The solution of this project is to attach the stoppers to the wickets so as to reduce the contact stress onto the tinplates, in turn removing the occurrence of wicket marks. Data were collected from multiple sources: research or conference paper, company websites, properties tables and interview with Kian Joo employees. The study and analysis of the data provided a conceptual framework for the study, and the model served as an analytical tool in data analysis. By creating a Pugh’s Matrix to analyse a variety of materials, the researcher found out that a material known as PEEK was able to be used to be formed into the stoppers. PEEK contained high thermal resistance, low wear rate, high strength, high formability and high operating temperature. Simulations were done using SOLIDWORKS on the optimal stopper design to finalise on the ideal choice. Based on the simulation results, the curve edge was filleted to reduce the stress onto both the stopper and the tinplate, with radius of 0.5mm, 1.0mm and 1.5mm. It was found that the usage of stopper was able to reduce the average and maximum fretting stress onto the tinplate by 58.1% and 72.7% respectively. The average and maximum stress on the stopper were reduced by 3% and 17.7% respectively. The improvement of the quality of the tinplates will result in a better overall quality of the products stored. The findings of this research will be able to help Kian Joo Factory to finally eliminate the wicket marks from their tinplates. The elimination of the wicket marks will also reduce the overall cost of Kian Joo Factory in their production. The results of my findings can help other factories that use similar mechanisms in their production line too.
