Abstract

The whole assembly process of the metal door frame currently employs human operators to execute the process. The assembly process is found to be time-consuming and require lots of labour workforce to increase the production rate. Hence, an automated metal door frame assembly machine was designed, and simulation was done through Dassault Systemes software. This final year project has designed and simulated the automated assembly machine to carry out the assembly process without involvement of human operators to increase production rate and cut down the labour cost. Next, the literature review about the available automated assembly techniques that can do the processes like frame profiles merging, profile keys bending, corner seam welding and frame transportation was done by researching the relevant information through journal papers, patent, websites. Besides that, the whole system design of the automated assembly machine was discussed in detail and drawn by using SolidWorks. The cycle time of the automated assembly method obtained from the simulation was then compared and evaluated with the existing method. It is shown that the cycle time of the automated assembly method has reduced 72.1% from the manual assembly method. Last but not least the daily production rate of the automated assembly method has increased 72.1% as compared with the manual assembly method. This indicates that the automated assembly method can improve the production rate of the assembled door frame by reducing the cycle time compared to the manual assembly method.
