Abstract

The final year project is to design and fabrication of mobility aid for the disabled are can help the caregiver and nurse to lift the lower body paralyzed patient from the bed or seat for transfer patient. This can reduce the burden of caregiver and nurse during transfer patient because this device can replace the manual method of transfer patient. The project will be kick-started with doing research on the existing product in the market are having a similar function to get the idea for the design. The multiple designs were generated based on the literature review and the review in the market survey. By establishing various key performance index, the final design was chosen from the multiple designs using decision matrix evaluation. Force and moment calculation of the design was then performed to make sure the device is stable while lifting the patient. The deformation of the beam also calculated by manually then simulated by SolidWorks software to make sure the lifting bar will not break during lifting the patients. And the material and the component to build the prototype are listed and purchased. The process of fabrication was conducted well and the prototype was completed in time. The testing for stability and the lifting mechanism were performed. Regarding the structure, it meets the initial design requirement to sustain 100 kg load, but as for the lifting mechanism, the maximum load that theoretically can lift is only 94 kg which is caused by gearbox ratio is lower than the design required. Lastly, the costing of the materials and components are around Rm 423.
