Abstract
In this project, a digital model of a table fan is developed using Simscape Multibody System which is an extension of Simulink of MatlabTM. The digital model of the table fan is simulated using the parameters from the actual fan such as, the nominal power rating, voltage, frequency, capacitance as well as rotational speed and the results are used to compare with the actual model. These values are used to determine the power of the fan, efficiency of the motor and the rotational speed of the fan. The rotational speed for both actual model and the digital twin is compared to determine the capability of the software. After the simulation, the rotational speed for the digital twin are 1760rpm, 1763rpm and 1768rpm respectively compare to 900rpm, 1000rpm and 1200rpm of the nominal readings provided by the manufacturer. The efficiencies of the motor for 3 different speed cases are 67.98%, 65.79% and 61.24%. The percentage error between the simulation results of the digital twin compared to the actual model are relatively high. Some factors that affect this huge variation between the model and simulation are due to the limited information on the parameters of the motor, the parameters inside the model are defaults values provided by the developer and the actual motor values are different from the defaults values. Also, there is no calculation provided which can accurately provide those parameters. In conclusion, due to the inability to obtain the accurate parameters, the results obtained from the software varies from the actual model. In conclusion, the Simscape Multibody System is not suitable to be used to develop the digital twin for a table fan due to the limitations of the software.
