Abstract
The dissertation of this project is to produce a medium density fibreboard made from sugarcane bagasse for household application like furniture. In the sugarcane bagasse particleboard produced, the particleboard after immersed in for 30minutes, water absorption occurred and caused the thickness swelling. In this paper, research on the alternative waterproofing materials used on the sugarcane bagasse and new composition materials that can reduce water absorption and thickness swelling. Formaldehyde and compositions of additive are studied in this paper. Pugh matrix is used to select and finalized the better composition material to make particleboard. The study of patents for similar binder has been carried out in literature review to optimize the composition of sugarcane bagasse. In this project, particleboard made from sugarcane bagasse with sodium silicate and wallpaper adhesive and particleboards were produced by 170°C hot compression moulding process with 30 minutes and 25 minutes respectively. The particleboards were then prepared with 2 types which are sample with polyurethane surface coating and uncoated. From the observations, the uncoated sample are exceeded the JIS standard of 12% swelling in thickness except 1 sodium silicate. For those sample with coating are meet JIS standard, below 12% of swelling in thickness after 30minutes of water immersion. The density, thickness swelling, flexural/bending strength, of the particleboards were conducted based on the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) and the particleboard produced under this project in according to JIS could be classified as decorative particleboard and base particleboard type 8.
