Abstract

This study explored and design of an automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) to solve the problems of managing and storing electronics components and other small items for the customer of Ringo Technologies Sdn Bhd. Throughout the study in literature review, which included all types of ASRS vertical carousel ASRS system is most suitable for the requirement of Ringo technologies Sdn Bhd. Most of the existing vertical carousel system are using fully automated system which mean when the electrical power supply is cut off, the device will stop operating as well which will affect the production of company. Furthermore, most of the vertical carousel system using only one chain and one arm technology, which mean if the arm of chain is broke, it will damage the system stored item which will cause loss to the company. Through study on the uninterruptible power supply system, where it is a type of backup system for providing backup power supply when the main power supply is down to ensure the vertical carousel system able to operate for temporary. Therefore, three conceptual design have been designed and Pugh’s matrix was created for selection of the final design. Solidworks software was used for designing models and simulated using Solidworks to obtain the forces acting on the components that carried weight. Comparison between manual calculation and simulated results by Solidworks were made. The final design is using two arm and two chain system where each arm will be install at each chain, which mean if one of the chain is broke, the system still able to operate for temporary. It also consists of an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system install before the main power supply go into the system to charge the batteries in UPS system so that the UPS able to provide power to the system. The design will install with two motors to prevent affecting the operation of the system when the motor that use to drive the movement of the device is stop working.
