Abstract

Resident of Kampung Orange Asli Ulu Kemensah had been suffered from lack of access clean water and this had led to many of them becoming sick. At Kemensah Hulu there are approximated 200 residents living there. Averagely 1 person need 2 liters per day so for 200 resident, 400 liter of water per day is needed. The objective of the project is to develop a sustainable water purification system for Kemensah Hulu. Literature review had been done for this project about water filtration and water desalination system and this system is self-sustainable, required very less maintenance and had a constant source of clean water as long as there is water to filter. Comparison between water filtration system and solar desalination system is done. Water filtration system needed large space to be built and it is very expensive to build a single water filtration system for a small village like Kemensah Hulu. On the other end solar desalination system can be design in either large-scale or small scale which in this situation is better fit than a normal water filtration system. The system chosen for this project is solar still, the design of solar still in this project is a single slope, single basin solar still with a glass inclination angle of 30°. This design resulted in averagely produce 0.06367 liter of water per day. 400 liter of water is needed per day so divide it by 0.06367 liter, around 6367 solar stills is needed it order to provide for the whole village but solar still can be increase in area so 0.25m x 0.25m solar still can provide 0.06367 liter per day, it make 0.9973 m2 to produce 1 liter of water. 0.9973m2 multiple with 400, in the end 398.92m2 of solar still is needed in order to provide sufficient water for the whole village. This system will be implemented with a mechanism that will prevent the water overflow in the solar stills. This project will bring the benefit to the resident of Kemensah Hulu.
