Abstract

This study aims to enhance the safety features of the assistive device for the visually impaired community by implementing theoretical knowledge and practical skill sets. Assistive smart blind glass is one of the blind’s assistive instruments that has been developed to assist the visually impaired or blind person in daily life. It is used as an assistive glass that consists of safety systems like voice guidance, obstacle detection, GPS tracking, and others. Besides, the current existing method still lacks side alerting and limitation of using visual processing of existing blind glass and the cost of existing blind glass is not affordable by the poor community. In this project, a blind assistive glass is developed to assist disabled people in guiding them from one point to the other point, especially in a crowded area. Besides that, the objective of this project is to develop a cost-effective blind glass for the user, enhance the safety features of entry-level blind glass and design a compatible assistive glass for the user, particularly blind people. The blind glass prototype is constructed successfully and able to perform well in the stated glass’s features testing. The experiment results show the proposed methodology is able to achieve great accuracy in obstacle detection and the side-alerting feature as well as the prototype is able to perform in a real-life environment. The overall accuracy of both features are more than 90%. Furthermore, the construction of the prototype costs around RM 36.70 which has met the objective of the project.
