Abstract

The title of the project is “A Study to Increase Oil Extraction Rate (OER) of Palm Oil Mill”. The national OER rate has not shown significant increase for the past 20 years. it is a challenge for the palm oil industry to improve the performance of OER. One of the causes of low extraction rate could be due to inefficient of oil mill processing at the settling process. Thus, this project is aim to increase the productivity of crude palm oil extraction rate in specific at the clarification process which involve a settling tank that separates the sludge from the oil and clean oil is then harvested. The objective of the research is to design a settling tank that can improve from the current efficiency of MHSK Engineering. As a result, two types of conceptual designs have been generated which is the vertical flow and horizontal flow for the tank concept. Both of the concepts will then be translated into a full 3D engineering design. Simulation will be performed and analysed to determine which of the settling tank model that has a better performance in terms of retention rate and efficiency.
