Abstract

This is an industry collaboration project with a glove manufacturing company. The research topic is “Design of a Hole Detection System on a Conveyor Chain”. Moving conveyor chain is used for the processing line in this company. The bearings on the conveyor are moving on the track and holes are formed and damage the track after prolonged usage. Thus, the aim of this research is to design a sensing mechanism that can detect and measure the holes before it becomes harmful and affecting the quality of the products. Wireless sensors are useful devices used by industries for purpose of inspection and measurement. This type of detection sensor is able to communicate with the electronic sensor remotely and the cost is relatively cheap. Aholding device is needed to hold the sensing components and mounted on the shaft of the conveyor chain bearing during inspection time. Hardware, software, specification and system dimension was determined to generate a 3D design model. Simulation analysis was done for deformation and safety of factor. The final designed obtained has a part weight of negligible and a deformation of 0.03mm. When detection performance was conducted on the prototype built, the result showed that the sensing is able to detect holes as small as 5mm in a dark surrounding which fulfil the requirements of the company.
