Abstract

The number of non-renewable sources used to generate electricity is decreasing. In order to overcome the two main issues—exhaustion of non-renewable sources and environmental pollution, experts are putting effort into studying alternative sources, namely the renewable sources. Wind energy is one of the most famous renewable sources. Wind turbines catch wind, the wind pushes the blades, and they rotate, and that kinetic energy is converted to electrical energy with the help of the generators. This project aims to provide the readers on knowledge about renewable energy and their advantages. Throughout this project, several designs of wind turbine, including Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) and Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) will be studied in terms of working principle, advantages, and disadvantages for both systems. The inspiration of the design of the portable VAWT is the combined Savonius-Darrieus VAWT. Designing of the portable VAWT will also be shown in this project is done using SolidWorks. Due to the quality issue of the motor, the theoretical calculations are based on the specification of the motor, and the power coefficient obtained is 0.23, which is within the range of other wind turbines.
